I considered mpd, but have decided to use xbmc as remote support is much easier and you can edit the Font.xml file to make it readable on a small screen. xbmc also has a ton of add ons for internet radio etc. which will add functionality which as far as i am aware is not available via mpd. Plus I think usb dac support is coming back to raspbmc one day.

thanks for your hard work on your project. May I ask whether you have experience with remote/ IR control of mpd and a mpd client? My intention is to use the RPi together with an old Xbox IR Remote (which works out of the box with lirc as it already does with xbmc) and a plain X without window manager, but with a mpd client which is started directly. Together with a small 7″ LCD this would produce quite a nice music player.

However, I have not yet experience with mpd and IR remote. It seems that either a mpd client supports directly lirc OR one uses lirc to emulate keystrokes to control the mpd client.

Then – instead of investing too much into the USB problem above 44.1khz with an USB DAC – it seems easier to invest into a good HDMI/SPDIF/Stereo-Cinch converter. This would take additional load from the USB port.

thanks for your answer,
best wishes
leo
