I have this excellent product:-

http://jlsounds.com/i2soverusb.html

(An XMOS usb to i2s converter plus a PCM5102 DAC.)

This WORKS perfectly on:-

1. A Cranberry SC20 thin client, with an AMD Geode LX800, 500MHz runs up to 192 Khz perfectly.

2. A Beagle bone Black running debian-wheezy-7.0.0-armhf-3.8.13-bone20 runs up to 192KhZ perfectly

Unfortunately the XMOS product FAILS completely on Raspyfi Beta , at all bite rates. All that is output is a faint screeching noise.

HOWEVER the same Raspyfi installation works fine with a Music Streamer ll DAC. ( Dac only specified up to 96Hkz) .

The raspyfi also works fine with a Dr. Nano DAC (specified up to 96KHZ ).

I am using a 5V 2A power supply to the Raspberry pi. The XMOS plus PCM5102 is drawing about 500ma from the USB 5V.

I believe that the Raspberry Pi (model B) cannot deliver sufficient power, although 500ma should be OK, I am building a 5v external supply to power the XMOS , I will report any progress.

Patrick

EDIT

I just remembered, I have a powered USB hub. I dug it out of the cupboard, and connected the XMOS/DAC to it, feeding the hub from the Raspberry Pi running raspyfi Beta.

It now works, playing Flac files from my NAS, ( Openmediavault ), over wired ethernet.

At 192Khz It is very poor!, there is an audible repetitive dull clicking noise on the audio output in groups of 4 or 5 pulses every second or so. very distracting. This occurs at 192Khz but not on 24/ 96Khz flac files, which play perfectly.

I could not hear any noises when using the XMOS/DAC at 192Khz, on either the x86 thin client or with the Beaglebone black, so I assume the Raspyfi is having problems at 192 Hkz.

Has anyone got Raspyfi working propery at 192 Khz?

regards

P
