Seems that I was looking but not seeing! The directories were there, but the structure was messed up as my son has dumped his copy of our music directory from his itunes into the music folder on the NAS so there are a lot of directories that are wrong.

For some reason I didn't notice on the Gnome player; perhaps because the search seems to work better.

I can spend another little while carefully deleting the duplicate files...

Anyway, I found the files I was looking for, and the tracks from the 2013 HD music sampler (24 bit/48-96 kHz FLAC from http://www.hdtracks.com) all play beautifully.

On Gnome Media Player it can be done just as I want it, , but using the iPad and android apps, they seem to interpret the metadata if I navigate the directories rather than simply showing me the files.

OK, not really a raspyfi issue but wonder of any raspyfi users know the way round this one?
